Repair or Replace? An Honest Appliance Decision Guide

The appliance repair industry has an incentive problem: repairs pay, and replacement installs pay better. So the advice you get is often shaped by something other than your interests. Here is the decision framework I use, including the cases where I tell people not to hire me.

The 50% rule, with a modifier

Replace if the repair costs more than 50% of a comparable new unit installed, AND the appliance is past two-thirds of its expected lifespan.

Both halves matter. A $380 repair on a five-year-old $1,400 refrigerator is 27% of replacement cost on a machine with a decade left — obviously repair. A $380 repair on an eleven-year-old $700 washer is 54% of replacement on a machine near the end — replace. A $380 repair on a two-year-old machine is worth doing almost regardless of percentage, because you're buying eight more years.

Expected lifespans

Find the manufacture date on the model/serial plate — usually inside the door, along the frame, or on the back. Most manufacturers encode the year in the serial number, and a quick search of "[brand] serial number date code" will decode it.

2026 repair costs, so you can run the math

Diagnostic fees locally run $70–$130 and should be credited toward the repair if you go ahead. If a company won't credit it, that tells you the diagnostic is a profit center rather than a step in fixing your machine.

Faults that are almost always worth repairing

• Refrigerator evaporator fan motor — $150–$280. Common, quick, and the machine is otherwise fine.
• Refrigerator defrost thermostat or heater — $180–$320. Classic cause of "freezer fine, fridge warm."
• Dryer heating element or thermal fuse — $120–$260. Cheap parts, straightforward job.
• Washer drain pump — $180–$300. Very common on front-loaders.
• Dishwasher drain pump or spray arm — $150–$280.
• Oven bake or broil element — $150–$280. One of the easiest repairs there is.
• Door seals, hinges, latches and gaskets — usually under $250 and they restore efficiency too.
• Anything on a built-in unit — because replacement means cabinetry work, and that changes the math entirely.

The five faults that mean replace

1. Compressor failure on a standard refrigerator. $600–$1,200 to replace on a machine worth $900. Almost never worth it outside built-ins.
2. Sealed system leak (refrigerant). Expensive, requires EPA-certified work, and leaks tend to recur.
3. Washer transmission or outer tub. The most expensive assembly in the machine.
4. Cracked drum or tub. Structural, and the labor to reach it is brutal.
5. Multiple simultaneous failures on an old machine. When the control board and the pump both go on a nine-year-old washer, the rest of the machine is nine years old too.

Three traps

The "it's the control board" quote without a real diagnosis

Control boards are the most-blamed and least-often-actually-failed component in appliances. They're expensive, which makes them a convenient diagnosis. Before accepting a board replacement quote, ask what test was performed to isolate it. If the answer is vague, get a second opinion.

Extended warranties

The math rarely works. A $250 five-year warranty on a $900 appliance is 28% of the purchase price against a repair you'd probably pay $200–$400 for once, if at all. Put the money in a jar instead. The exception is genuinely expensive built-in units, where a single service call can be four figures.

Replacing before measuring

In older Burbank, Glendale and NoHo homes this is the expensive mistake. 1950s kitchens have 30-inch refrigerator openings that modern French-door units don't fit. Condo laundry closets are sized for machines that have since been discontinued. Measure the opening, the doorway it must pass through, and the hallway turn before you buy anything. And measure the depth including the door swing, not just the box.

If you do replace

Delivery crews drop the machine and leave. Getting the old one out, the new one in, leveled, connected, door-swing reversed if needed, and a full cycle tested is a separate job — and in an older home it's the moment to replace the 1958 shutoff valve behind it before it fails on its own schedule. That's a $130 add-on that prevents a flood.
